This one and half day course provides the knowledge and techniques to allow employees to recognize hazards in the water, manage the risks associated with working near water, provide bank-based rescue cover for their colleagues working next to basic water environments, survival swimming in swiftwater and the safe use of waders.

This course is designed to provide students with both a theoretical and practical knowledge of the basics of swiftwater rescue. The class includes one day of classroom instruction and one day of practical field exercise. Students are trained in hazard recognition, equipment use, and basic shore and boat-based rescue techniques, as well as a wide variety of other skills. After completing this course, personnel will also be able to be in the support role for technician level rescuers in higher risk technical water rescues.

This course is designed for professional river users who require a rescue capability in a whitewater environment, eg raft guides and safety kayakers, and is recognized by Maritime New Zealand and the New Zealand Rivers Association as an appropriate qualification to work as a river guide.
